I have very few regrets when it comes to time that I spent with my Grammie. One that I do have though is that I did not learn to can from her. I asked many times for her to show me how to make grape jelly. Finally one day, Grammie agreed to show me how to have the best grape jelly in the cupboard. We went to No Frills, for what I thought would be supplies, and she bought me a jar of Welch’s Grape Jelly. Despite my disappointment, she smiled and said “Sammi, you live in a world where you can buy it cheaper than you can make it.” That was the end of the conversation.
Grammie was a child of the depression, a career woman and earning a comfortable life for herself. She did not seem to mind leaving behind the old ways. And yet, she still taught me a thing or two.
Being a medium, the Grandma’s in the Spirit world also share tips and wisdom. They come through sharing that frugal means are needed and to save for the rainy days. The Grandma’s give insight on cooking, saving and how to stretch a dollar. With the current situation around finances for many, I thought that I would share some of them with you today.
Wait until tomorrow to buy “the thing”.
The Spirit Grandmas understand the desire to have nice and useful things. In addition to saving money, they share the value of wants vs. needs. A useful tip that has come up a few times is “Put it back on the shelf. If you still want it tomorrow, it will be there.”
Soup is a great cheap meal.
I was so intimidated to make soup in my younger years. I could cook so many things, but that was the one that I was in my head about. Two things around soup that Spirit Grandmas have shared are to “use your scraps” and to “make with a friend”. Anything goes with homemade soups. If money or supplies are low, see what is in your fridge and have a friend do the same and join you. You will have company to cook and company at meal time. You will also have some leftovers for tomorrow or the freezer.
The Magic Soup Bag
Save all of the vegetable scraps. Save all of the leftover spaghetti sauce, taco meat and more.Once the bag is full, the ingredients are perfect for broth, soup and casseroles. Simply add some broth or canned tomatoes to stretch it further.
Some of you may be wondering how I got over my intimidation of soup making. The answer is potatoes. When i realized that I could make any soup creamy and dreamy by adding a couple of potatoes, it was a game changer!
Go low and slow.
This is perfect for your meats and Spirit says for life. We live in a world that is on “go” every day of the year. Finding ways slow us down can be great for our physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. In the Spiritual and Coaching worlds, we often talk about breath work and self care.
Our Grandmothers did not need trendy names for this. There was value in enjoying mealtimes and relaxing on Sundays. They gathered in family and/or community for batch cooking and helping neighbours. Taking our time helps to turn off the fight or flight. It also allows us to be more open to the guidance of Spirit and our higher self.
Be Picky
It is shared over and over to be picky about our friends and how we spend our hard earned money. Spirit Grandmas also suggest that we pick our food or know who picked it. Buying local and in buying in bulk to preserve is a great way to save on our grocery bill and the number of trips that we need to take to the store. Meats, vegetables, fruits and more can be put away on a shelf to keep out bellies full all winter. Chris’s Aunt Alice would tell me that you could never have too many jars of apple sauce. I have not been able to prove her wrong yet.
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
Yes, we have heard these three words together our entire lives. (Shout out to Mr. Rogers, Mr Dressup and Oscar the Grouch!) In a commercial world where the ease of buying a pack of socks outshines the thought of darning socks, there are many skills that have been left in the past. Saving our jars, our buttons and more can offer huge cost savings. For those who love psychometry, holding items that belonged to our loved ones long ago help us in connecting and hearing even more messages.
There are some great ideas that clients have shared over the years of how they have reused the clothing of their loved ones in Spirit. Making pillows, blankets and bags or aprons can make use of every scarp with little experience in sewing.
Depression Wisdom with Modern Conveniences
Grammie was on to something, despite my disappointment. We do not have to reinvent the wheel or go without. Purchasing during sales, creating a budget and sticking with it and buying in bulk are some great ways to get more and save. When our needs are met, we are able to raise our vibration to welcome in more abundance.
Fear during the depression set the tone of abundance for generations. Taking the lessons, applying them with love and sharing with others, we can do this in a new way. What are some ideas that your grandmothers taught and are teaching you?
